GIVING FACE TIME

From laser to lift, elastin-boosting to electromagnetic – facials are more than a slap of masks on the face. BeautyBlackBook in Singapore faces up to the most innovative and effective ones.
With all the facial products and cosmetics available to us, it’s not surprising that when it comes to a professional facials, most women’s expectations are higher – perhaps too high. After all, most women do quite well with their at-home product range and brand of choice.
But a professional facial is a different thing altogether. Apart from a luxurious experience, a facial should be a service that one cannot do herself – whether it is a simple manual matter of extracting blackheads, or high-tech skin boosting and refining methods with machines.
For sure, the pampering is a plus, but it’s not the main entree (for that, there are always massages). And of course, at the end of the day, nothing is more important than the results: clear, smooth, and glowing skin.
Not all facials are created equal. Do take note of the kind of facial you need and choose accordingly. Before you commit to anything, be sure to find out the steps involved.

what: C-Matrix ($172) before GST
duration: 2 hours
procedure: This was a very relaxing yet hardworking facial package that is as massage-intensive as it is skin-beneficial. Products from the Swiss brand Celuva are used liberally at every stage of cleansing, scrubbing and toning. Unusually, facial extraction extended to the entire face and not just the T-zone. Afterwards, radiotherapy was used was used to kill bacteria. To de-stress the skin, the facialist used a soothing lotion combined with a detox mask. The highlight was a rich mask – the actual C-Matrix – to boost collagen and this was applied and left on for 45 minutes, during which you also get a revitalising back and shoulder massage as well as a leg massage.
verdict: Definitely good value for money, this facial is more than just pampering. The massage and the C-Matrix collagen mask make it a winner.
Five Facials Facts
Things to note before you put your best face forward
FACIAL FACT 1: Have a facial once a month or once every six weeks. If you have problem skin and acne, you may need one more frequently, at least, initially.
FACIAL FACT 2: Not all facials are created equal. Do take note of the kind of facial you need and choose accordingly. Before you commit to anything, be sure to find out the steps involved (for example, whether with or without facial extractions), what products or technology will be used, the results you can expect and the timeline these effects take to show up.
FACIAL FACT 3: It’s a good sign if the facialist does a skin diagnosis before anything else – even better if she asks you about your skin, skin type, the products you use, and the lifestyle you lead. After all how can she help your skin if she doesn’t know you well?
FACIAL FACT 4: Cleanliness and hygiene is particularly important – look for things like whether disposable wipes or sterilised tools are used to cleanse off products. These are better than laundered and re-laundered towels.
FACIAL FACT 5: The hands of a facialist – like the hands of a dentist or a surgeon – are important, particularly when it comes to extraction procedures. You’re looking for a light touch and someone who knows instinctively when to stop.
